Ask your second grader:
• What was the main idea or our anchor text this week? Can you support your main idea with 3 details?
• If you come to an unfamiliar word while reading, how might you figure out the meaning of the word using context clues?
• What was the author’s purpose of in the book The Story of the Statue of Liberty?
• How do you decompose 314 + 235? How do you solve the same problem in a vertical algorithm?

Upcoming events:
• Report cards go home on Monday!
• Harvest parties are October 31st. No costumes, please!
• Conferences are November 1st. A form for sign-ups will be sent soon.
• Our first field trip is Friday, October 27th. We will see Mr. Popper’s Penguins at the Nashville Children’s Theatre. Look for the field trip permission slip in the Friday folder. Please pay the field trip fee online as soon as possible (information for payment is on the permission slip). We will be eating lunch at school before leaving.

Ask your second grader:
• What is a prefix? What does the prefix pre- mean?
• What are some text features you might see in an informational text? What is the purpose of each?
• What is a collective noun? Give an example.
• What is the sum of 23+63?

Upcoming events:
• Fall Break is October 6-20.
• Our first field trip is Friday, October 27th. We will see Mr. Popper’s Penguins at the Nashville Children’s Theatre. Look for the field trip permission slip in the Friday folder. Please pay the field trip fee online as soon as possible (information for payment is on the permission slip).
-Each 2nd grade class will need two chaperones. Please email your child’s teacher by 3:00 on October 16th if you would like to volunteer as a chaperone. Because we are limited to two chaperones per class, teachers will draw names from a hat if there are more than two volunteers. You will be notified by your child’s teacher if your name is drawn. The cost for chaperones is $8 in advance (submit to teacher) or $20 at the door. Siblings cannot attend. Parent chaperones will meet us at the theatre at 11:45.
• Report cards will be sent home on Monday, October 23rd.

• In what experiment did a solid dissolve?
• What is the expanded form of 321? The standard form? The word form?
• Which 2nd grade class has the most food collected for the food drive?

Upcoming events:
• Please help us support Second Harvest Food Bank by donating a few of their most needed items next week. The food drive will end Thursday, October 5th.
• We have enjoyed teaching all of the 2nd graders during our science rotations. Please encourage your child to talk about what he/she has learned about changes of matter this week.
• Class picture day is Tuesday, October 3rd.

We hope you all enjoy the Family Picnic tonight! This even is always a fun way to get together as a school.

Earth Club

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Join up this school year to help take care of our community and Earth!

Kids for a Clean Environment (FACE) is a kids club teaching kids about the environment and leadership. We’ll have lots of activities focused on outdoor fun and building leadership skills. Our activities will include planting in the Percy Priest gardens and trees around the school, making recycled paper and learning about recycling, creek exploration and clean up, and much more!

Kids FACE is open to 1st  through 4th graders, we’ll meet rain or shine on Thursday’s after school until 4:15. We have 15 slots so join now! Our first meeting will be Thursday, September 7th . The cost for joining is $20 to help pay for snacks, drinks and other club supplies.
